New Bipartisan Bill Promotes Ethical, Adult Stem-Cell Research

"Tax dollars should be invested in research that offers the greatest hope for patients and currently...that evidence points to adult, not embryonic, stem-cell research."

(Washington, D.C.)—Last week President Bush not only stopped an attempt at Federal funding for embryonic stem-cell research, but he also took forward action by issuing an executive order to promote research that does not destroy human life.

That action has taken the form of H.R. 2807—the "Patients First Act," introduced by Rep. Randy Forbes, a Republican, together with Rep. Dan Lipinski, a Democrat. The bipartisan legislation would "promote research and clinical trials using stem cells that are ethically obtained and show evidence providing clinical benefit for human patients."

Carrie Gordon Earll, senior bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action, remarked on the measure. "Both the executive order and legislation serve as a challenge to supporters of embryo destruction to put politics aside and focus on science for the sake of patients," Earll said. "It's the patients who lose in the politics of this issue. Tax dollars should be invested in research that offers the greatest hope for patients and currently—based on the hard, cold facts of stem-cell research—that evidence points to adult, not embryonic, stem-cell research."
