South Dakota Will Try Again with a Newly Revised Bill to Ban Abortion

by Joe Kafka/CR : Jan 29, 2007 : The Christian Post http://www.christianpost.com/article/20070128/25459_Legislators%3A_S.D._Abortion_Ban_to_be_Introduced_Again.htm

"Many people said the lack of exceptions was the reason they voted against last year's bill."

A newly revised version of the bill that would've banned abortion in South Dakota, turned down by voters last November, is scheduled to be presented on Tuesday. Polls have largely shown that the people in South Dakota are against abortion, however the total closure on the bill caused many to vote against the measure last November. So what's different this time? The new measure will include exceptions.

"The additional exceptions for rape, incest and the health of women are what voters want," said state Rep. Mary Glenski, one of the new bill's sponsors. According to Glenski, voters are not tired of the issue. She said it makes sense to bring the issue back because most South Dakotans oppose abortion. "I feel a real responsibility to try and respond to what the voters told us after the election," said Glenski. "Many people said the lack of exceptions was the reason they voted against last year's bill."

However Senator Brock Greenfield, director of Right to Life for South Dakota, believes it's a mistake to revive the issue until the upper courts show a serious swing in favor of creating more limitations on abortion. He has recently co-sponsored two anti-abortion bills that will require doctors to read a measure to a woman prior to an abortion that informs them it is illegal to be forced into an abortion. It will also require clear signs to be posted in clinics and hospitals stating the same message.

"
There are moments in history when a door for massive change opens. Great revolutions for good or evil occur in the vacuum created by these openings. It is in these times that key men and women, even entire generations, risk everything to become ... the hinge of history... that pivotal point that determines which way the door will swing. FRC Makes "Net" Gains

ON RU-486:

For nearly seven years, FRC has documented the health risks surrounding the abortion drug, RU-486--and the list continues to grow. We have taken our objections to Capitol Hill, to the Food and Drug Administration, and now to the Internet. As part of a campaign to inform the world about the dangers of this drug, FRC is unveiling a new website dedicated solely to RU-486, www.ru486info.com. This groundbreaking site will be an invaluable resource to the public, press, and health community who are seeking accurate news and information about the abortion drug.

While we oppose the use of the RU-486 regimen because it ends a human life, we also believe that the legal and safety issues raised by the drug should be a matter of concern to all people of good conscience regardless of their opinions regarding abortion.

I Believe It's Worth Asking The Question!

House Approves Unethical Embryonic Stem Cell Research Bill

Last week the U.S. House voted and passed this bill. There have been several recently publicized studies of Stem Cells with proven successes for treatments as alternatives to Embryonic Stem Cells!

While $$$ Millions have been spent through private and California funded studies on Embryonic Stem Cell research ... there has not been nearly the headway or the proven track record (as that of the alternatives) for treating patients who suffer from things like heart disease and cancer!

as well as... the continued controversy!

Many constituents believe that to use Embryonic Stem Cells is ending a life which could be emplanted to help other families. I'd say the leadership that continues to push ending the lives of those Embryonic Stem Cells in the name of advancement are...BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

CONTACT: J.P. Duffy, (866)FRC-NEWS

Washington, D.C. - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved federal funding for research that requires the destruction of human life.

Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council, issued the following statement:

"Rather than defend human dignity, the Democrat led House of Representatives approved legislation to compel U.S. taxpayers to fund research that requires the destruction of human embryos. The President is absolutely right to veto this legislation. "This bill is a bait and switch. It would not just fund so-called "leftover" embryos, it will create a market for creating and cloning more human embryos for the express purpose of killing them."

7/11/07
Today the House of Representatives will vote to force taxpayers to fund stem cell research that requires the destruction of human embryos, knowing full well that their efforts are as flawed as the research itself.

With President Bush vowing to veto the legislation, FRC is working with our friends on the Hill to insure the President's veto can be sustained. Last week, when scientists announced that cells from amniotic fluid were used as a successful and ethical alternative, the liberal reaction on Capitol Hill was further proof that Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) is more interested in advancing a culture of death than she is in helping patients by pursuing true cures.

Instead of celebrating the new studies, the leadership was quick to denounce it as "not enough." H.R. 3, if passed, would also mean that fewer dollars would be available for research that has a proven track record of treating patients who suffer from things like heart disease and cancer.

If supporters of embryonic stem cells research sincerely cared about patients, they would work to fully fund the cord blood bank that FRC helped to pass in a strong bipartisan fashion last Congress.

As the House decides the fate of H.R. 3, FRC will report tomorrow on how the newest "pro-life" Democrats voted in this first test of their campaign promises.

Embryonic Research, a Tough "Cell" for New Leadership

New research from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine may pose a substantial threat to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) "100 Hours" agenda.

According to reports, scientists there have discovered yet another alternative to embryonic stem cell research (ESC) that increases the promise of treatment without destroying human life.

Stem cells found in the rich amniotic fluid that sustains a baby in the womb have the ability to grow into brain, muscle, and other tissues to fight and treat disease. Not only does the research lack the controversy of ESC, but it also hasn't generated the tumors that have so often been the result of embryonic experimentation. The news should deliver a crippling blow to the agenda of House Democrats, who hope to pass legislation that directs more taxpayer dollars to ESC as one of the hallmarks of their leadership. Regrettably, politicians have used embryos as a political football, endorsing science that has done far more harm to life than good to patients. As viable and ethical alternatives to destructive embryonic stem cell research grow, so too should opposition on Capitol Hill to taxpayer-funded research that destroys human embryos. As we continue to meet with House members this week, our goal is to hold them accountable to fund only methods that don't jeopardize human life. And, as science would have it, these ethical methods are the techniques producing results. Last week, the new House leadership talked a lot about ethics. If they truly care about setting ethical standards, then they should abandon their quest to subsidize unethical research and concentrate on research that cures without killing.

Child due from 1 of 1,400 rescued in Katrina chaos

NEW ORLEANS -- A baby album for Rebekah Markham's soon-to-be-born child could include something extra special: photos of police officers using flat-bottomed boats to rescue the youngster's frozen embryo from a sweltering hospital in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Markham is about to give birth via cesarean section, nine months after being implanted with an embryo that nearly thawed when the flooded Lakeland Hospital lost electricity.

"It's going to be exciting for the little baby, once he gets old enough to realize what it went through," said Markham, a 32-year-old physical therapist whose husband, Glen, 42, is a New Orleans police officer.

The baby -- the Markhams are guessing it's a boy -- will be one of the first born from more than 1,400 embryos rescued from the New Orleans hospital two weeks after the storm.

"That is great! I'm going to call all our officers and tell them. They'll be pretty excited," said Lt. Eric Bumgarner, one of seven Illinois Conservation Police officers and three Louisiana state troopers who sloshed through floodwaters to remove the embryos.
Bumgarner said he often has wondered what happened to the embryos.

Markham's C-section is set for Jan. 16. Because she and her husband have fertility problems, a clinic created embryos from her egg and his sperm in 2003.
Two were implanted immediately, and one grew into their first child -- a boy who turned 1 just before Hurricane Katrina hit.

The other embryos were stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at about 320 degrees below zero for future use.

The Markhams' embryos, along with those belonging to hundreds of other couples, were kept at the Fertility Institute's laboratory at Lakeland Hospital.

Two days before Katrina hit on Aug. 29, 2005, the clinic took steps to protect the embryos by topping off all of its tanks with liquid nitrogen and moving them to the third floor.
But Katrina's eight feet of water knocked out the electricity, and the temperature climbed. A freshly topped-off tank is safe for three to four weeks in an air-conditioned room, but "I'm sure the temperature was over 100 degrees in that hospital," said Dr. Belinda (Sissy) Sartor, a fertility expert for the institute.

Fearing the embryos would be ruined, she contacted a state lawmaker, who called Gov. Kathleen Blanco, and on Sept. 11, 2005, Illinois officers on loan to Louisiana set out in National Guard trucks, towing flat-bottomed boats.

A flat surface was essential: The 35- and 40-liter nitrogen tanks weighed up to 90 pounds and had to stay upright. If they tipped, nitrogen would spill.
The boats puttered past cars still flooded almost to their windows. The boats were taken through the flooded halls, and the embryos were floated across town to a hospital that hadn't flooded.

The Markhams, who live in Covington, haven't picked baby names yet. But if it's a girl, she won't be called Katrina.
"There's nothing good associated with that name," Rebekah Markham said.

no baby Left behind Have you saved a baby today?

About Us

No Baby Left Behind is a new website that keeps count of how many babies that have been saved from abortion. Our website features a counter tallying "saves" - babies who have been saved from abortion because of the actions of pro-life groups and individuals.

The submission form, located on the front page, allows groups or persons to submit information when they have saved an unborn baby from an abortion, either at an abortion clinic or elsewhere.

The No Baby Left Behind website's most prominent feature is the counter, also located on the front page. It is updated daily, according to the number of submissions received. No Baby Left Behind will only count saves submitted by No Baby Left Behind users, and can not possibly reflect all of the thousands of babies saved each year through the actions of pro-life individuals and groups. However, the growing number of saves recorded by the No Baby Left Behind counter will serve as an encouragement to pro-lifers everywhere and a testimony to the life-saving work of sidewalk counselors and activists.

"As the anniversary of Roe v. Wade draws closer, it is my hope that pro-lifers everywhere will not only continue their efforts in the pro-life movement, but also embrace No Baby Left Behind and join us as we celebrate lives snatched from the jaws of death.
- Joey Pfeifer, creator of No Baby Left Behind
