Lou On Critical Moment of U.S. History

Scientific Facts have "dramatically changed" the Stem Cell Debate

... to Present "cures everyone can live with"—Says Senator Brownback

by Aimee Herd : Dec 9, 2007 : Sen. Sam Brownback – FirstThings.com

"…what we knew in our hearts all along has turned out to be true. The strong ought to protect the weak and science is not to be feared, nor is it to be worshiped, but rather it should be regulated by sound ethical guidelines."

(Kansas, U.S.)—United States Senator, Sam Brownback (Kansas), may have dropped out of the presidential running, however he has not dropped off the radar. In fact, he continues to work with Senate colleagues on the issue of stem-cell research.

In an encouraging, and informative article, Brownback discloses the good news that recent studies have shown there is no need to destroy the innocent lives of the unborn with embryonic stem-cell research. Brownback cites a statement by Dr. James Thompson, asserting that science can pursue "the most promising stem cell research without killing, or even using, human embryos."

Below are a few excerpts from the article written by Sen. Brownback, which I recommend reading in full, by accessing the link provided.

"This shifts the debate fundamentally. Those who had moral reservations about research on the youngest of humans but were persuaded of the need to pursue treatments can now support this promising research without compromising their pro-life conviction. At the same time, those who claimed that embryonic research was the only promising way forward can unite around a promising new technique that presents no ethical dilemmas."

"What the vast majority of Americans want is now possible: the pursuit of promising research that does not cross ethical lines, honors human dignity, and preserves innocent life."

"…what we knew in our hearts all along has turned out to be true. The strong ought to protect the weak and science is not to be feared, nor is it to be worshiped, but rather it should be regulated by sound ethical guidelines. In doing so, science has shown the path forward: ethical research, promising science, and cures everyone can live with."

No Embryos, No Cloning, No Eggs--No Problem!

Two prominent embryonic stem cell scientists today published results showing that they can produce cells with the qualities of embryonic stem cells directly from human skin cells, without the need for creating or destroying embryos, without cloning, and without the need for eggs used in cloning.

The groundbreaking news by Dr. James Thomson, first to grow human embryonic stem cells, and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, Japan, was that they produced what are called "iPS" cells (induced Pluripotent
Stem cells) using a simple recipe that involved adding four genetic factors to a human skin cell. When comparing these new cells with existing embryonic stem cells, Thomson noted that iPS cells "meet the defining criteria" for embryonic stem cells "with the significant exception that the iPS cells are not derived from embryos." Yamanaka and Thomson are to be congratulated for pushing forward the frontiers of science and demonstrating that good science can also satisfy ethical requirements. Coupled with the recent announcement by Dr. Ian Wilmut, cloner of Dolly the sheep, that he is shelving cloning as an unproductive technique in favor of this new ethical method, dubious experiments involving embryo cloning and embryo destruction are being rendered obsolete. Scientists can now work with "embryonic-like" stem cells without ethical concerns, while for patients the adult and cord blood stem cells continue to treat thousands of patients now.

Congress should move swiftly to ban all human cloning by passing the Brownback-Weldon human cloning prohibition.

Here Goes 'Mutton': Dolly Creator Rejects Cloning

This past weekend, the movement to ban cloning got some help from an unlikely source--the scientist most famous for attempting it.

Professor Ian Wilmut, the creator of Dolly the sheep, pu
blicly announced his decision to abandon "therapeutic cloning" and turn his attention to pro-life alternatives such as those being perfected in Japan with adult stem cells. He believes the "socially acceptable" approach "represents the future for stem cell research," rather than the nuclear transfer method he and his team used 10 years ago in creating Dolly. Although Wilmut was given the go-ahead to pursue human cloning in 2005, the professor has since declined. His decision, on the heels of last week's news that scientists had successfully cloned primates, should put a serious damper on any enthusiasm for projects that require the creation and destruction of cloned embryos. For all of the hype surrounding the monkey breakthrough, a couple of key details were lost on the media. For starters, the team leader of the Oregon primate program, Dr. Shoukhrat Mitalipov, admitted that the "efficiency is low" for the research and it is "not yet a cost effective medical option." Also, some reports estimated that it took over 15,000 monkey eggs to yield just two lines of embryonic stem cells, only one of which is normal. Meanwhile, as scientists waste precious time and resources on a procedure that the majority of the world considers morally unacceptable, pro-life alternatives are effectively treating everything from juvenile diabetes to spinal cord injuries--without the ethical headache. We can only hope that Wilmut's conversion will pull the wool from the eyes of the public, which should result in Congress turning away from spending more taxpayer money on embryonic stem cell research that is both unethical and ineffective.

LITTLE ROOS

Who Are these little Roos?

A Reversal has begun!
IT IS TIME FOR THE GENERATION OF ROOS TO COME FORTH!
God... May there be many more little Roos!!

And the elephant smiled. “Do you see what I mean?…

They’ve proved they ARE persons, no matter how small.
And their whole world was saved by the smallest of All!”

“How true! Yes, how true,” said the big kangaroo.

“And, from now on, you know what I’m planning to do?…
From now on, I’m going to protect them with you!”
And the young kangaroo in her pouch said…
“…ME, TOO!”
“From the sun in the summer. From rain when it’s fall-ish,
I’m going to protect them. No matter how small-ish!”

Having just witnessed the miracle of new life, I was amazed at the story of the Lord's protection over an unborn baby that doctors in the U.K. tried--unsuccessfully--to abort. The child, who physicians claimed suffered from an enlarged heart that would likely be fatal in the womb, was a twin. Heeding their doctors' advice, which was to put the child out of his misery, Rebecca and Mark Jones reluctantly agreed to abort the baby in hopes of saving his brother. Gabriel, as he is now known, had other ideas. When the medical team tried to sever his umbilical cord to cut off the blood supply, the cord was too strong. Next they tried to divide the placenta in half "so that when Gabriel died, it wouldn't affect his twin brother." To everyone's amazement, Gabriel survived for another five weeks--long enough for Rebecca to deliver him. She and her husband now marvel that their babies are both alive and completely healthy. "No one could quite believe it," Rebecca says, seven months later. In fact, the procedure that doctors thought would end Gabriel's life was later credited with saving it. The distribution of nutrients through the separate placentas helped give him the strength he needed to keep fighting. As moving as this story is, it does underscore just how vital it is for families to have pro-life doctors who share their worldview. Like the Joneses, we're often at the mercy of the medical community's opinion, and surely we all want their advice to be illuminated through a pro-life lens.

Planned Parenthood Charged with Violating Kansas Abortion Laws

by Jennifer Mesko, associate editor

Millions in tax dollars could be funding illegal activity.

Planned Parenthood faces criminal charges for aborting late-term babies in violation of Kansas state law. On Wednesday, Johnson County Prosecutor Phill Kline filed a 107-count indictment against the nation's largest abortion provider, specifically its Overland Park, Kan., affiliate. Johnson County District Judge James Vano found probable cause for the following charges:

  • 23 felony counts of making a false writing.
  • 29 misdemeanor counts of performing unlawful late-term abortions.
  • 26 misdemeanor counts of failure to maintain records.
  • 29 misdemeanor counts of failure to determine viability.

The charges provide detailed evidence that Planned Parenthood was performing illegal late-term abortions by ignoring viability testing laws and regulations, and then falsifying documents in order to conceal and cover up those facts. The first hearing is set for Nov. 16.

Approximately 40 states - including Kansas - have laws banning most late-term abortions. Life advocates are urging an investigation into the other 859 Planned Parenthood facilities nationwide, which receive a combined $300 million a year in taxpayer dollars.

"Planned Parenthood is accused of falsifying records to cover up numerous violations of state law against aborting late-term babies," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. "Planned Parenthoods around the country receive federal funding, so our tax dollars may be subsidizing this alleged illegal activity.

"The Department of Health and Human Services should begin an immediate investigation to discover whether other Planned Parenthoods around the country engage in the same type of potentially illegal activities, violating state and federal law.?

Peter Brownlie, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, told The Associated Press the clinic doesn't perform any late-term abortions.

"We always provide high-quality care in full accord with state and federal law," he said.

Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, said he believes the 107 counts are just the tip of the iceberg.

"The charges filed Wednesday validate our claims that Planned Parenthood has been operating outside the law," he said. "We are grateful that there has been a breakthrough in the corrupt political system in Kansas that has for years looked the other way while abortionists blatantly disregarded the law at the cost of innocent lives. Now, finally, some measure of justice is being served."

Pray for President G.W. Bush

Please continue to pray that President Bush will have the opportunity to appoint a 3rd. Supreme Court Justice on his watch!~Glenn

A President's Pull

Some political pundits are suggesting that the only thing the President of the United States does that influences the abortion issue is to appoint judges. While I certainly agree that judicial restraint is the primary concern of many in the pro-life community, it's naive to suggest it is the only concern. When it comes to judicial nominees there are no guarantees, as the Supreme Court picks of Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush would attest. A President's decisions on the sanctity of human life range much wider. It was President Reagan who adopted the "Mexico City Policy," barring U.S. foreign aid to organizations that performed and promoted abortion overseas and who cut off funding to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because of its role in China's coercive abortion policy. It was under President Reagan that the U.S. blocked the use of federal funds for research using tissue from aborted babies. Additionally, President Reagan surrounded himself by strong pro-lifers and even wrote a long essay on the subject: Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation. President George H.W. Bush upheld President Reagan's pro-life policies, vetoing 10 bills that contained pro-abortion provisions, including four appropriations bills. These are just a few examples of many showing how a President can influence pro-life policy - it's not just the judges.

Adult Stem Cell Success--In the Flesh!

In June, much of the media coverage focused on President Bush's veto of the Senate bill that would have required taxpayer funds for experimentation that destroys human embryos. What the President has accomplished on the issue since then is equally newsworthy. To encourage true research and progress, President Bush issued an Executive Order directing HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt to support projects that pursue "alternatives" to embryonic stem cells. Yesterday, the National Institute of Health (NIH) released its plan called, "Expanding Approved Stem Cell Lines in Ethically Responsible Ways." Considering the latest success stories for adult stem cells, NIH should have no shortage of projects to pursue. At the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, scientists have succeeded in "reprogramming" stem cells from mice testes into a host of tissue types. If the same results occur in humans, these adult stem cells could soon treat everything from brain disorders to heart disease. In Boston, medical researchers have been able to extract adult bone marrow cells and coax them to grow into tissue that can help replace dysfunctional heart valves. As scientist John Mayer emphasized, "These are stem cells derived from bone marrow, [but] they are not embryonic stem cells." At Wake Forest University, researchers have used adult stem cells to "grow" a functioning human bladder. As for the triumphs of embryonic stem cells... well, we're still waiting--but patients don't need to wait with adult stem cells.

N.J. Supreme Court Abides by Hypocritic Oath

Doctors in the state of New Jersey are under no obligation to tell their patients the truth about their unborn children, according to yesterday's unanimous ruling by the state Supreme Court. In the 5-0 decision, justices said the court, "will not place a duty on doctors when there is no consensus in the medical community or among the public" on when life begins. The suit was filed in response to a botched abortion suffered by a New Jersey woman at the hands of a physician who misled her about the personhood of her unborn child. According to her testimony, when Dr. Sheldon Turkish advised her to have an abortion, she asked whether the "baby was already there." Turkish allegedly replied, "Don't be stupid, it's only blood." Seven weeks after the abortion, the women went to the hospital for excessive bleeding. Contrary to what Turkish told her, the physicians discovered that "parts of the baby" were still inside her. She sued Turkish for failing to provide her with accurate medical information before she consented to the abortion. In its final opinion, the court wrote, "On the profound issue of when life begins, this court cannot drive public policy in one particular direction by the engine of common law when the opposing side, which represent so many of our citizens are arrayed along a deep societal and philosophical divide." Interestingly enough, this same court didn't seem to mind "[driving] public policy in one particular direction" during the state's marriage debate last fall. In Lewis v. Harris, the justices did more than drive public policy on marriage--they rewrote it! In true dictatorial fashion, the court ordered the state's legislators to abandon democracy and grant homosexual couples the same rights as married spouses. One might ask where that same concern for the state's "deep societal and philosophical divide" was last October? Obviously, New Jersey's high court reserves its restraint for cases that aid the liberal cause.

Call to Prayer over Disturbing New Method of Research: Mixing Humans, Animals, Creating Hybrid Embryos to Destroy

"...creating embryos purely for the purpose of research turns the embryo into nothing more than a research tool, and a source of raw biological material for experiments." –Dr. David King, Human Genetics Alert

News Staff/AH (September 5, 2007)

EDITOR'S NOTE: As the norm, we try to find positive reports and stories to post on Breaking Christian News, however, at times there will be prayer alerts that seem too important NOT to run. The sickening story below is one of those. One can only imagine the depravity that could arise as this research is given license, not to mention the disease and destruction that could be introduced into human genetics—even accidentally. And so we issue a call-to-prayer that this decision would be reversed so hybrid embryos would not be allowed or toyed-with in the UK, or anywhere. –Aimee Herd, BCN.

(United Kingdom)—If it was the premise of a horror movie, I wouldn't go see it. But, as surreal as this might seem, this disturbing method of research has been approved by the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA). (Photo: BBC News)

According to an article from This Is London, Labour ministers recently changed their minds about outlawing human hybrid research, giving scientists who are licensed by the HFEA a green light to conduct disease-related experiments with embryos that are part human, part animal.

Those scientists wanting to conduct such research cited a shortage of human eggs used for experimentation, as the reason for the hybrid creations.

Dr Stephen Minger, of King's College, said, "I can understand why people are freaked out by this, but the embryos will never be implanted and the cells won't be used for therapy—this is about studying the development of diseases in a Petri dish."

However, Dr. David King, with Human Genetics Alert (a research watchdog group) noted, "We are not a pro-life group but creating embryos purely for the purpose of research turns the embryo into nothing more than a research tool, and a source of raw biological material for experiments."

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

A new campaign sweeping through U.S. cities is hoping to remind Americans that the most effective weapon in the fight against abortion is prayer.
As part of a 40 Days for Life initiative, more than 20 cities have signed up to participate in 24-hour prayer vigils outside their local abortion center. From September 26 to November 4, thousands of volunteers will spend over 960 hours interceding on behalf of children in the womb and their mothers and fathers. The model is based on the biblical 40-day periods in which God worked miracles through Noah, Moses, David, Elijah, and Jesus. Organizers have already experienced similar wonders in cities that conducted their own vigils earlier this year. As a testament to the event's impact, seven cities are reporting results that range from a 28 percent reduction in abortion to recruitment of over 1,000 pro-life volunteers. In Dallas, 14 women reconsidered their abortions, and neighboring Houston noted that area pregnancy care centers had over 120 appointments from moms who didn't follow through on their scheduled abortions. To take part in this life-changing movement, log on to www.40daysforlife.com and witness the kind of difference your community can make on this important debate.

Former Abortionist Repents During Nashville's "The Call"

"God, I repent. I repent for myself and all abortionists all over..."

Elizabeth O'Brien/TN (August 11, 2007)

(Nashville)—LifeSiteNews reports that during the massive prayer rally of 07.07.07 that drew an estimated 100,000 primarily young people to Nashville this July, a former abortionist begged God for mercy and joined crowds in praying for a definitive end to the national crime of abortion.

During "The Call" rally, former Planned Parenthood abortionist Dr. Patti Gibbink reportedly stood up and testified, confessing her sins and begging God to end abortion. She told the crowds, "Ten years ago, I did abortions for Planned Parenthood." Here she paused, notes reporter Elizabeth O'Brien, overwhelmed with tears.

"God, I repent. I repent for myself and all abortionists all over. We have sacrificed innocent lives to the altars of Baal and Moloch. God, God...forgive me Lord, and other abortionists. God, hear our cry. Be merciful to us. Jesus, I plead Your blood over my sins and the sins of this nation."

Alabama Woman's Heart Rebuilt by Her Own Adult Stem Cells

"I told the doctor, 'I don't understand why we have this huge political mess going on about stem cells'...I'm living proof that adult stem cells work far better than embryonic. And why should embryonic even be in discussion?"

Jennifer Mesko/AH (July 31, 2007)

(Alabama)—When 58-year-old Carron Morrow, an event planner and mother-of-two from Alabama, suffered her 4th heart attack, she was told that the only way she would live was with a transplant. With 100,000 people waiting for a new heart, she began to think it would be the end of life for her.

But when Carron was given an opportunity to take part in a revolutionary new study using adult stem cells to repair hearts, she jumped on board, hoping that she would not be one of those to receive a placebo. (Photo: Citizen Link)

1,000 Pro-Lifers Lead ‘Phenomenal’ Offense at Infamous Abortion Clinics

Wed, Jul. 18, 2007 Posted: 13:47:51 PM EST

Some 1,000 pro-lifers from across the nation reportedly participated during a three-day prayer offensive against late-term abortion clinics in Kansas.

The Wichita Awakening concluded with five hundred Christians attending the final praise and worship concert on Monday at the Mid-American Indian center. Earlier that day, the group had gathered in front of George R. Tiller’s notorious abortion mill for one of the largest turnouts there since 1991, according to host organization Operation Rescue. Attendees included notable pro-life movement leader Norma McCorvey, the former “Roe” of Roe v. Wade, who now works to end abortion.

“The phenomenal response to this event can be attributed to the collective shock and concern across our nation to Tiller’s late-term abortion practice, for which he is now facing criminal charges,” said Operation Rescue president Troy Newman about Wichita Awakening,

“And to the increasing enthusiasm of the emerging generation to support the cause of life,” he added.

...Participants at the Women’s Health Care Services protest wore red tape printed with the word “LIFE” over their mouths...One of the many highlights of the recent three-day event was the successful dissuasion of a woman from carrying out her abortion plans on Monday.

The woman, who was scheduled to receive an abortion at Tiller’s clinic, was encouraged by the group to visit a pro-life medical clinic, Choices Medical Center, located directly next door, according to Operation Rescue. The woman after consultation at the clinic decided to keep her baby.

“We are excited to see the fruit that will come from the seeds of prayer that were planted in Wichita over the weekend,” said Operation Rescue president Troy Newman.

Study Shows Major Shift Toward Pro-Life Among Youth

"Younger voters, especially women, are embracing a pro-life position in surprising numbers and in sharp contrast to attitudes that held sway 15 years ago."

Kevin Mooney/TN (July 10, 2007)

(Loda, Illinois)—Cybercast News Service (CNS) has reported on a study by Overbrook Research that shows younger voters, especially women, "are embracing a pro-life position in surprising numbers and in sharp contrast to attitudes that held sway 15 years ago." (Photo: Bound4Life.com)

The results of a study in 1992 followed a "self-interest hypothesis" in which "women and men under 30 were the most ardently 'pro-choice' (39 percent) and the least likely to be strongly 'pro-life' (23 percent). Today, by contrast," notes the report, "among the current generation of 18 to 29-year-olds, 36 percent say they are strongly 'pro-life,' while just 18 percent say they are strongly 'pro-choice.'"

Reporter Kevin Mooney notes that authors of the study argue: "Where previous generations may have been inclined to 'divorce sex from its consequences,' new voters are entering the electorate at a time when medical advances highlight development in the womb and when public attention is focused on the 'gruesome procedure' of partial birth abortion."
