On August 11, 2009, six-month old pre-born twins Kaleb Michael Blair and Harley Olivia Blair, lost their lives as a result of a head-on car crash in Bennington, Vermont. The driver of the car that collided with the Blair family minivan was cited with responsibility for the accident - but she will not stand trial for the deaths of the six-month old pre-born twins because Vermont statutes do not recognize them as human persons.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Richard Sears, D-Bennington, introduced legislation that would account for such situations. His bill would enhance penalties for assaulting a pregnant woman, wording that he believes walks a careful line: creating consequences for harming an unborn child without unfurling a debate about abortion rights.
This bill falls far short of the necessary recognition of babies in the womb.
Sen. Vince Illuzzi, R-Essex/Orleans, will be offering his own legislation ... that will "bring a separate homicide charge" for killing a fetus that is "consistent with other states." Pray 4 VT To get a Fetal Homicide Law
