Planned Parenthood faces criminal charges for aborting late-term babies in violation of Kansas state law. On Wednesday, Johnson County Prosecutor Phill Kline filed a 107-count indictment against the nation's largest abortion provider, specifically its Overland Park, Kan., affiliate. Johnson County District Judge James Vano found probable cause for the following charges:
- 23 felony counts of making a false writing.
- 29 misdemeanor counts of performing unlawful late-term abortions.
- 26 misdemeanor counts of failure to maintain records.
- 29 misdemeanor counts of failure to determine viability.
The charges provide detailed evidence that Planned Parenthood was performing illegal late-term abortions by ignoring viability testing laws and regulations, and then falsifying documents in order to conceal and cover up those facts. The first hearing is set for Nov. 16.
Approximately 40 states - including Kansas - have laws banning most late-term abortions. Life advocates are urging an investigation into the other 859 Planned Parenthood facilities nationwide, which receive a combined $300 million a year in taxpayer dollars.
"Planned Parenthood is accused of falsifying records to cover up numerous violations of state law against aborting late-term babies," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. "Planned Parenthoods around the country receive federal funding, so our tax dollars may be subsidizing this alleged illegal activity.
"The Department of Health and Human Services should begin an immediate investigation to discover whether other Planned Parenthoods around the country engage in the same type of potentially illegal activities, violating state and federal law.?
Peter Brownlie, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, told The Associated Press the clinic doesn't perform any late-term abortions.
"We always provide high-quality care in full accord with state and federal law," he said.
Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue, said he believes the 107 counts are just the tip of the iceberg.
"The charges filed Wednesday validate our claims that Planned Parenthood has been operating outside the law," he said. "We are grateful that there has been a breakthrough in the corrupt political system in Kansas that has for years looked the other way while abortionists blatantly disregarded the law at the cost of innocent lives. Now, finally, some measure of justice is being served."
