Embryonic Research, a Tough "Cell" for New Leadership
New research from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine may pose a substantial threat to Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) "100 Hours" agenda.
According to reports, scientists there have discovered yet another alternative to embryonic stem cell research (ESC) that increases the promise of treatment without destroying human life.
Stem cells found in the rich amniotic fluid that sustains a baby in the womb have the ability to grow into brain, muscle, and other tissues to fight and treat disease. Not only does the research lack the controversy of ESC, but it also hasn't generated the tumors that have so often been the result of embryonic experimentation. The news should deliver a crippling blow to the agenda of House Democrats, who hope to pass legislation that directs more taxpayer dollars to ESC as one of the hallmarks of their leadership. Regrettably, politicians have used embryos as a political football, endorsing science that has done far more harm to life than good to patients. As viable and ethical alternatives to destructive embryonic stem cell research grow, so too should opposition on Capitol Hill to taxpayer-funded research that destroys human embryos. As we continue to meet with House members this week, our goal is to hold them accountable to fund only methods that don't jeopardize human life. And, as science would have it, these ethical methods are the techniques producing results. Last week, the new House leadership talked a lot about ethics. If they truly care about setting ethical standards, then they should abandon their quest to subsidize unethical research and concentrate on research that cures without killing.

NEW ORLEANS -- A baby album for Rebekah Markham's soon-to-be-born child could include something extra special: photos of police officers using flat-bottomed boats to rescue the youngster's frozen embryo from a sweltering hospital in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Markham is about to give birth via cesarean section, nine months after being implanted with an embryo that nearly thawed when the flooded Lakeland Hospital lost electricity.
"It's going to be exciting for the little baby, once he gets old enough to realize what it went through," said Markham, a 32-year-old physical therapist whose husband, Glen, 42, is a New Orleans police officer.
The baby -- the Markhams are guessing it's a boy -- will be one of the first born from more than 1,400 embryos rescued from the New Orleans hospital two weeks after the storm.
"That is great! I'm going to call all our officers and tell them. They'll be pretty excited," said Lt. Eric Bumgarner, one of seven Illinois Conservation Police officers and three Louisiana state troopers who sloshed through floodwaters to remove the embryos. Bumgarner said he often has wondered what happened to the embryos.
Markham's C-section is set for Jan. 16. Because she and her husband have fertility problems, a clinic created embryos from her egg and his sperm in 2003.
Two were implanted immediately, and one grew into their first child -- a boy who turned 1 just before Hurricane Katrina hit.
The other embryos were stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at about 320 degrees below zero for future use.
The Markhams' embryos, along with those belonging to hundreds of other couples, were kept at the Fertility Institute's laboratory at Lakeland Hospital.
Two days before Katrina hit on Aug. 29, 2005, the clinic took steps to protect the embryos by topping off all of its tanks with liquid nitrogen and moving them to the third floor.
But Katrina's eight feet of water knocked out the electricity, and the temperature climbed. A freshly topped-off tank is safe for three to four weeks in an air-conditioned room, but "I'm sure the temperature was over 100 degrees in that hospital," said Dr. Belinda (Sissy) Sartor, a fertility expert for the institute.
Fearing the embryos would be ruined, she contacted a state lawmaker, who called Gov. Kathleen Blanco, and on Sept. 11, 2005, Illinois officers on loan to Louisiana set out in National Guard trucks, towing flat-bottomed boats.
A flat surface was essential: The 35- and 40-liter nitrogen tanks weighed up to 90 pounds and had to stay upright. If they tipped, nitrogen would spill.
The boats puttered past cars still flooded almost to their windows. The boats were taken through the flooded halls, and the embryos were floated across town to a hospital that hadn't flooded.
The Markhams, who live in Covington, haven't picked baby names yet. But if it's a girl, she won't be called Katrina.
"There's nothing good associated with that name," Rebekah Markham said.

Fueling the 2006 South Dakota abortion ban were two messages by Pastor Steve Hickey of Church at the Gate in Sioux Falls. Though originally intended only for his congregation, thousands of copies began to circulate the state, laying a Biblical foundation regarding the spiritual dynamics behind abortion. Pastors statewide heard these messages and preached them in their pulpits.
Part One is titled "The Fires of Molech in America" and focuses on the demonic forces behind abortion.

Following today's vote in the House of Representatives, U.S. Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey, said the majority vote the legislation received shows that there is "overwhelming" concern for the pain children suffer during an abortion.
"Today, we can no longer deny, trivialize, or gloss over the significant and ever expanding body of knowledge that shows that an unborn child suffers real pain — excruciating pain — when he or she is dismembered as in a D & E abortion, or jabbed with scissors in a partial birth abortion, or poisoned by an abortionist," Smith said during debate on the House floor this morning.
Smith's legislation garnered a majority, but the "Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act" — H.R. 6099, was just shy of 'super-majority' necessary to pass under suspension of the rules.
During the debate, Smith pointed out that the partial-birth abortion ban trials have drawn new attention to the pain that unborn children feel during an abortion.
In expert testimony during those trials, Dr. Kanwaljeet Anand, director of the Pain Neurobiology Lab at the Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute explained, "the human fetus possesses the ability to experience pain from 20 weeks of gestation, if not earlier, and the pain perceived by a fetus is possibly more intense than that perceived by term newborns or older children."
Smith criticized the opposition for their use of junk science during the House debate this morning. "The debate [yesterday] exposed a 2005 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association that denied the pain unborn babies feel during an abortion because it was authored by pro-abortionists who did not reveal their biases or affiliations.
JAMA should be ashamed of itself for publishing a slick pro- abortion propaganda piece. One author, Eleanor Drey, runs the largest abortion clinic in San Francisco, which performs an estimated 600 late-term abortions annually, including abortions by dismemberment. None of that was disclosed when the JAMA article was published," Smith said.
Smith noted that the support shows that a majority of members of the House of Representatives are extremely concerned about the pain unborn babies feel during the act of abortion.
"This vote shows that there is indeed an overwhelming concern for the suffering of the unborn during an abortion. The unfortunate thing is there are still those in the House who are simply not concerned about the pain unborn children feel nor do they see the importance in relaying this critical information to women," Smith, the bill's author, said after the vote.
Smith said he fully intends to continue to push this legislation, which requires that women considering an abortion are informed of the intense pain their baby would feel during an abortion and offer her the option to reduce the pain inflicted on the unborn baby through anesthesia, in the 110th Congress.

The JAMA article, often cited by opponents of the bill, claimed that available research suggests that the human fetus does not experience pain until about 29 weeks. As the NRLC memo and the linked documents demonstrate, the JAMA paper has been contradicted by some highly credentialed authorities in the field, and is inconsistent with longstanding observations and treatment of newborns who survive long-term after being born as early as 23 weeks. Moreover, the lead author of the JAMA article, a medical student, was previously an attorney for NARAL, and one of the other authors is a longtime activist who runs the largest abortion clinic in San Francisco, performs hundreds of late abortions every year, and has been a leading critic of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act. According to an article by the medical writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, who brought these associations to the attention of the JAMA editor after JAMA published the paper, "JAMA editor-in-chief Catherine D. DeAngelis said she was unaware of this, and acknowledged it might create an appearance of bias that could hurt the journal's credibility. 'This is the first I've heard about it,' she said. 'We ask them to reveal any conflict of interest. I would have published' the disclosure if it had been made.")
